In the 2009 reboot of Star Trek, a troubled young James T. Kirk is challenged by a Starfleet Captain concerning his direction in life.
“Your father was captain of a Starship for 12 minutes,” the captain tells him. “He saved 800 lives, including your mother’s and yours. I dare you to do better.”
Every generation wants to leave its mark. To follow blindly in the footsteps of those who went before means no growth or progress. As you grow and learn, you see areas where your predecessors succeeded and failed. The challenge before you is to build upon the victories and correct the mistakes. Will you do better? I believe you will.
The song “Hosanna” by Hillsong proclaims, “I see a generation rising up to take their place with selfless faith.” In the culture and in our churches, it’s inspiring to see that young people are rejecting compromise and embracing the fullness of following Christ no matter the cost. As the world becomes filled with more and more noise, there are Christ-followers who are energized by the Holy Spirit to speak truth to the culture and showing their light to darkness.
There is a generation who realizes that devotion to Christ is not a privately held belief but one that is realized through its actions. They are not only speaking up, but they are also devoting their lives to ending poverty, modern slavery, injustice, infanticide and hypocrisy. As idols and gods are celebrated, they use every opportunity to raise the banner and truth of the one, true God. And they exhibit lives that are obviously impacted by their faith.
You, my young brothers and sisters, are a bold generation of unashamed Christ-followers. You are impacting a world that desperately needs Jesus. You are going to do better.
